Jessica turned the ignition in the rental car, synced her phone with the car speaker, and called Lolita. An art heist was one thing. A dead robber with mob connections was quite another. Only the mafia could have orchestrated a murder in prison in a matter of hours. Time to bring in an expert on organized crime.

“My Montana friend.” Lolita’s voice was as refreshing as a summer rain during fire season. “Drank any bad grappa lately?”

“Very funny.” Jessica started the car and pulled out of the parking lot. “I’m in Boston, working for the art crimes division of the FBI.”

“Impressive,” Lolita stretched the r into a purring sound. With her shiny black hair, sage green eyes, and agile karate moves, Lolita did remind her of a cat.

“I’m driving, so I can’t talk long.” Jessica tried to look at the GPS and merge into traffic at the same time. She didn’t know her way around Boston yet. Given her sense of direction, she could get lost in puny Whitefish, Montana for cripes sake. “Have you heard of a gangster by the name of Cobra, also known as Snake-Eyes?”

“Snake-Eyes,” Lolita repeated.

“Cobra.” She heard Vanya’s voice in the background. Vanya was Lolita’s second cousin and a bit of a gangster himself. He’d been in and out of Bratva like a gopher in a Montana field. “He’s a myth.”

“Vanya knows him?” Jessica asked. “Does he know where to find him?”

Lolita said something in Russian, presumably to her wiry cousin. “He says Snake-Eyes doesn’t exit.”

“He is a suspect in the biggest art heist in history.” Jessica blew at her bangs.

Lolita whistled. Then more muffled conversation in Russian. “In Boston?”

“The Albertina Gardener Museum.” Jessica swerved to miss a man who was talking on his cell phone instead of paying attention.

Vanya was talking in the background again. “Cobra is a fairytale. Like Santa Claus, only bad.”

“You mean Santa doesn’t exist?” Jessica chuckled.

“I know some rich Harvard boys itching for a well-run high stakes poker game,” Lolita said in her sultry Poker Tsarina voice.

No. Not poker. Not again. Lolita was famous for hosting high-stakes poker games for the rich and famous. Unfortunately, not all the rich and famous were honest. In fact, some were downright crooks.”

“What are you suggesting?” Jessica asked, although she knew full well what her resourceful friend was up to. “I hope you’re not planning to come mess up my shot at a real job.”

“More like save your job.” Lolita laughed. “We’ll call you when we get there.”

“You’re coming to Boston?” Jessica nearly rammed the car in front of her.

“See you soon, milaya.” Lolita made kissing noises and then hung up.

Whenever Lolita used Russian endearments, Jessica knew to expect trouble. The marshal wasn’t going to be happy about a couple of Chicago Russians interfering in their investigation. Jessica should have kept her big mouth shut. Then again, if anyone could root out a mobster, it was Lolita and Vanya.

Trouble never travels alone. Lolita was one thing… her half-cocked cousin Vanya was quite another. Last time
